A Walk In Manhattan: Seasoned Vegan

ecoRDN takes the D-Train south to Harlem 125th Street / St Nicholas Avenue.

After misreading the map and going in the wrong direction we discovered St Nicholas Park and some amazing park steps that led to St Nicholas Terrace, exploration for another day! Back on track, we made our way to Seasoned Vegan at 55 St Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. Seasoned Vegan as stated on their website is a family business owned an operated by Mother and Son, Brenda and Aaron Beener.

They explain the term ‘soul food’ is used loosely because they aren’t referring to typical cuisine specific to the Southern region of the United States, but rather any food prepared by a chef who uses flavorful ingredients and also infuses love and care.  (Trust us, you can taste the love!). Their menu offers a variety of foods from cooked and raw appetizers, fresh juice smoothies, salads, burgers, wraps, cooked and raw entrees including a special of the month, hot and cold beverages and desserts.

The place is small and was already half full when we arrived, there was a wait but sometimes you have to wait. The large windows looked out to W113th Street, it was a lovely, dramatic cold grey Autumn afternoon. The leaves were vibrant in their waning hour, flashes of electric reds and fiery oranges contrasted the bright slate sky.

We ordered the tuna melt and the special-of-the-month entree of BBQ riblets, collard greens, and sweet potato soufflé, although we substituted mac-n-cheese for the soufflé, it was a day for comfort food, it was a day for vegan cheese!

We were happily surprised to also receive a mixed greens salad to start it off so we deer-noshed on crisp field greens tossed in a sweet, fresh vinaigrette. And then the main course arrived.

The riblets were sweet and very filling (think vegan General Tso’s), and the sides were amazing. Collard greens with tomatoes and that absolute “OMG cheesy” mac-n-cheese. The mac-n-cheese at Seasoned Vegan is no joke.  But the tuna-melt stole the show for Johnny, it was a perfect blend of toothsome chopped protein, rich melted cheese and vegan mayo. Seasoned to perfection and served inside a toasted tortilla wrap.

Seasoned Vegan was a great find, another gem to have on our ‘dining out’ roster. If you are in NYC and looking for thoughtful plant-based food prepared with love, give Seasoned Vegan a visit.
